Frequently asked questions

Renting

What do I need to rent a car?

When you rent a car from Adrem we require two proofs of identity. One of them obviously has to be a driver's license. The second one can be a passport or a European identity card. Make sure your proof of identity is valid. Especially driver's licenses can be confusing in this respect; check the expiration date. We also need a proof of address, for example a recent bank statement or phone bill (less than 30 days old) or a plane ticket. For mid-size cars you need a credit card.

I am 18 years old and I only just got my driver's license, can I rent a car?

Yes, you can. Other car rental companies often add an extra charge, but Adrem doesn't. The regular rates apply to you. Everything about the deductible you can read in the terms and conditions. To be able to rent a middle class car and higher, you need to be 21 years old and you must have had your driver's license for at least 1 year.

Can I return my rental car outside opening hours?

Yes, you can. You can park the car in front of our office and leave the keys in the special secure mailbox. The car will not be checked until the next morning, however, which means that you are responsible for the car until then.

Are people other than myself allowed to drive the car?

Everyone with a valid driver's license is allowed to drive an Adrem car. An extra driver costs € 3 per day. We do ask you to leave copies of the drivers license of any other drivers with us beforehand. If we don't have a copy of the driver's license of all drivers, the car is not always insured! Keep in mind, however, that you are responsible for the car since you rented it. This means that you remain legally liable for offenses and the like.

How is the car insured?

Your car has comprehensive third-party liability/collision insurance and a personal accident insurance is also included. The maximum third-party covering is € 2,500,000.- per occurrence. Maximum number of insured passengers is 5 for passenger cars, 9 for 9-person buses and 3 for delivery vans.

How long is one rental day?

A rental day is from 9:00 untill the next morning at 9:00.

What to do in case of an accident or a breakdown?

If you have any problems, for whatever reason, you can always call +31 43 352 11 00. You can also find this phone number on your key ring. You can also contact the office where you rented the car; you can find the number of this office in the letterhead on your contract. In case of an accident, do not forget to fill in the accident statement form. You will find a copy in the glove compartment, together with a card with the phone numbers of various emergency services.

What happens if I get a ticket?

We will charge you for tickets during your rental period. The amount of the ticket will be increased with a sum of € 9,- administration costs.

What do I have to do if I, during my rental period, would like to prolong my rental?

With prolongation of the rental, you must ask the Adrem office where you have rented the car if this is possible. You have to visit the office to raise the deposit with the costs of the extra rental days.

I have reserved a Volkswagen Golf, but I get an Opel Astra. Why is that?

At Adrem you can speak out about a certain car model, however we can never guarantee that this car is available. Reservations can only be made on car classes, we do our best to give you your preferential car.

Driving in the Netherlands

Which insurances do I need to take out?

You need to arrange a travel insurance in your country, among other things in case your personal belongings are damaged, lost or stolen. For driving in the rental car within the Netherlands, you don't need an insurance. Your rental car has comprehensive third-party liability/collision insurance. The maximum third-party covering is € 2,500,000.- per occurrence.

How busy is it on the roads in the Netherlands?

During the rush hours on the road (weekdays from 7.30 am - 9.30 am and 16.30 pm - 19.00 pm) it is very busy on the highways. But during the summer holidays (July and August) it is most of the time less busy.

What is the maximum speed on the road in the Netherlands?

On the highways (A-roads) the maximum speed is 100 kilometers (+/- 62 miles) or 120 kilometers (+/- 74 miles) an hour. On provincial roads (N-roads) the maximum speed is 80 kilometers (+/- 49,7 miles) an hour. In cities the maximum speed is 50 kilometers (+/- 31 miles) an hour.

International travel

In which countries am I allowed to drive the car?

You can take a rental car from Adrem without any problems to all 15 countries that were member states of the European Union before 1 May 2004 (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom) as well as to Switzerland and Norway.

You can only take a rental car from Adrem to a country other than these 15 European Union countries after prior written permission from Adrem and after signing an additional contract. Norway and Switzerland are an exception. Contact our staff for more information.

It is not permitted to drive with our rental cars in the following countries: Lithuania, Russia, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Jugoslavia, Esthonia, Albania, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Moldova, Macedonia.

Do I need extra insurance when traveling outside of the Netherlands?

An extra international insurance is compulsory when traveling outside of the Netherlands. This insurance includes, among other things, a replacement car if the original car can no longer be used as a result of damage or a breakdown and cannot be repaired within two workdays. It also guarantees the best possible assistance in case of problems (including, for example, when the driver is no longer able to drive).

This is because Adrem has taken out a very favorable insurance. The rate is € 3.00 a day. A similar insurance (for example IRK Plus from the ANWB) is also sufficient. You have to bring proof of this insurance when picking up the car.

Which accessories are compulsory in which countries?

In some countries it is compulsory to keep, for example, a first-aid kit, a spare pair of glasses or a reflective jacket in the car at all times. Make sure you are well-informed about this, for example by consulting the Dutch ANWB or the British AA. On www.anwb.nl (Dutch) and www.theaa.com (English) you can find information about traffic rules and the like in different countries.
